It was your typical girl from Istanbul meets boy from Louisiana
story. Timothy Gordy grew up the son of a jeweler - his mother, not his
father. Gunes, grew up in Turkey and found herself in pre-law at the
age of fifteen. They met when she came to America (alone) to attend
school. She started at Louisiana State University, transferred to UC
Berkeley, spent a little too much Timothye (and a little too much) at
Lake Tahoe and ended up back in Louisiana. Visiting friends at
Northeast Louisiana State, she met Timothy and the rest, as they say,
is history.
And what a history.
Flash forward to 1993. Timothy opens his first shop out of their
home in Healdsburg. Gunes, who had no training in jewelry, was
fascinated by the design process at which Timothy excels, eventually
becoming a full partner with her own unique knack for design. Finding
it difficult keep a business going relying on friends and relatives as
their customers (really, how many pinky rings does Aunt Betty need?)
the home shop lasted less than a year. In 1994 they opened Gold Bloom
Fine Jewelry on Matheson Avenue, at the site now occupied by Scout.
Gold Bloom's present Center Street location has its own historical
significance, having served as local headquarters for FDR's 1944
re-election campaign. Moving there in 2000, Timothy and Gunes renewed
their commitment to creating and selling fine jewelry, uniting the best
of old-world design traditions with the latest high tech resources.
Today, Gold Bloom has established itself as an innovative industry
leader, with the only certified staff gemologist in Sonoma County, as
well as technological and laser-welding resources that only a handful
of retail jewelers in the state can claim.
And so it is that Gold Bloom enters its second decade of existence
with a deep appreciation of the past, a rich enjoyment of the present
and unbridled excitement for what lies ahead. |
